If you’re thinking about booking a session, you probably have a few questions. Here are the answers to the ones I hear most often. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, just reach out.
Let’s Start with the Two Questions I’m Asked Most Often
These come up in nearly every conversation I have with new clients, so it makes sense to start here.
What if my dog isn’t well trained, won’t behave, or can’t be off leash?
Most of the dogs I photograph aren’t highly trained—and that’s completely okay. While it helps if your dog can stay in place for a few seconds, it’s not a requirement. During our consultation, I’ll share a few simple tips you can use to prep your dog beforehand.
If your dog can’t be off leash, no problem. We’ll use a leash during the session to keep them safe, and I’ll remove it during editing. Your photos will still look clean, natural, and leash-free. Safety always comes first.
In fact, most of the dogs you see in my galleries were wearing leashes during their sessions—you’d never know from the final portraits.

My pet is black—will you still be able to get good photos of them?
Absolutely! Whether your pet is black or just really dark, they can be tricky to photograph. It’s all about lighting—done right, it brings out the richness, shine, and texture in even the darkest coats. I’ve been a professional pet photographer since 2009, so I know how to make that happen.
In fact, lighting is essential for all pets (white ones are surprisingly challenging too!), but it’s especially key for black fur. You won’t end up with photos where your pet looks like a black blob. You’ll see their eyes. You’ll see the light in them. And you’ll see all the detail in their fur—the kind that gets everywhere but you’d never trade for anything.
Below are just a few examples of black pets I’ve photographed—including dogs and cats—and you’ll find plenty more throughout my galleries. You’d never guess these pets were considered “difficult” to photograph.

Pet Photography Session Details
What happens at the pre-session consultation?
The consultation is a chance for us to get to know each other—and it’s completely free, with no obligation or pressure to book.
I want to learn as much as I can about your pet and the bond you share. My goal is to create photos that reflect their personality and what they mean to you. Is it their regal posture? The way they curl up beside you? Their zoomies? Their side-eye? I’ll ask questions to learn what makes them uniquely them. And honestly, who doesn’t love talking about their pet?
We’ll also talk about the best location for your session, what to wear if you’ll be in the photos, and answer any questions you have so you’ll know exactly what to expect before session day.
Whenever possible, I like to meet in person. It helps both you and your pet feel more relaxed on session day, which often leads to more natural photos.
What is included in the session fee?
Your session fee covers everything needed to plan and photograph your custom pet session:
- A pre-session consultation where we’ll talk about your pet’s personality, your goals, the best location, and what matters most to you
- A custom photo session that lasts about 90 minutes
- An in-person or virtual ordering appointment where you’ll view your photos, choose your favorites, and select the artwork that’s right for your home
The session fee does not include printed products or digital files.
Every photo you purchase as a printed product includes a matching web-optimized digital copy, perfect for sharing with friends, family, and on social media.
Where will my session take place?
Most sessions take place on my private property in western Loudoun County, which offers a variety of natural backdrops and one-of-a-kind settings you won’t find anywhere else. There’s plenty of room for your dog to relax, explore, and just be themselves—without crowds, unfamiliar dogs, or other distractions. It’s an ideal setting for pets who are reactive, nervous, or simply more comfortable in a quiet environment.
If your home is where your pet feels most relaxed, I’m happy to come to you. Whether it’s your front porch or their favorite spot in the backyard, at-home sessions can be especially meaningful. I also photograph pets at local parks and other outdoor locations that are special to you.
During your consultation, we’ll talk through the options and choose the location that’s the best fit for your pet and the kind of photos you want to create.
What if the weather is bad the day of my shoot?
If the forecast calls for rain, strong winds, or extreme heat or cold, we’ll simply reschedule your session at no extra charge.
I start watching the forecast several days in advance. If the weather looks questionable, I’ll reach out to talk through the options and confirm our plan.
If it’s simply cloudy, we’ll still go ahead with your session. In fact, overcast skies often create beautiful light for outdoor photography. The soft, even light is flattering and brings out rich color and detail in your pet’s fur and the surrounding landscape.
After my photo shoot, how long will it take to see my photos?
Seeing your photos is one of the best parts!
We’ll schedule your ordering appointment within seven business days of your session. At that appointment, I’ll show you partially edited proofs of my favorite photos—usually between 25 and 60. The exact number depends on how many pets (and people) are in your session and whether we’re creating action photos.
Before we meet, I carefully narrow down the photos, so you won’t have to sort through half-blinks, awkward expressions, or duplicates—unless they’re genuinely funny. I usually include a few of those too.
It may sound like a lot of photos, but don’t worry. I’ll guide you through the entire process and help you choose your favorites.
Dogs, Cats, and More
Can more than one dog be included in my photo shoot?
Absolutely! I regularly photograph multiple pets during the same session. Whether you have two dogs or a whole pack, we’ll create both group photos and individual portraits.
If your crew is a little wiggly or not perfectly in sync, don’t worry. I rely on a mix of patience, planning, and a little editing magic to make sure everyone looks their best. Your dogs don’t need obedience titles—just bring the treats!
Over the years, I’ve photographed some very large groups, including eight dogs in one session and a litter of 11 puppies with their parents. And before you think, “There’s no way you’ll get all of mine looking at the camera at the same time,” you’re probably right! Those final portraits are often, but not always, created by combining multiple photos. Even after photographing pets professionally since 2009, getting that many dogs to sit still, look at the camera, and all have their eyes open at the same time is… optimistic.
The finished photo looks completely natural, and no one would ever know it wasn’t captured in a single click.
What if my pet is shy, nervous, or reactive?
Not every pet feels relaxed around new people, and that’s completely okay. I take a calm, patient approach and always work at your pet’s pace. We’ll never force a pose or push them beyond their comfort zone. And I’ll never approach or touch your dog unless you tell me it’s okay.
If your dog is reactive to other dogs or people, my private property may be the perfect setting. It’s quiet, tucked away, and free from crowds or unfamiliar dogs, with plenty of room for your pet to relax. I can’t promise you won’t spot the occasional deer, rabbit, or delivery truck, but it’s still one of the calmest places I know to photograph dogs.
During your consultation, I’ll ask about your pet’s personality, behavior, and any concerns you have so we can plan a session that’s the right fit for them.
Where do catsessions take place?
Almost all my cat clients say the same thing: “My cat doesn’t like to travel. Can you come to my home?”
Absolutely. Most cats hate car rides. I have four of my own, so I completely understand. That’s why I photograph cats where they feel safest: in their home.
Being in familiar surroundings helps your cat stay calm and comfortable, which means more relaxed, natural photos. It also gives me the opportunity to photograph them in the places where they spend their days, whether that’s perched on a favorite windowsill, curled up on the sofa, or supervising you from the kitchen counter.
Do you photograph pets other than cats and dogs?
Yes! In addition to dogs and cats, I’ve photographed horses, lizards, rabbits, birds, and snakes, as well as a variety of other pets. I especially love photographing lizards—they’re such cool creatures.
We can do the session at your home, where your pet already feels safe and comfortable. Or, if your pet travels well and you’re comfortable having them outdoors, you’re welcome to come to me.

Photos with People
Can I be in the photos?
Absolutely! You’re an important part of your pet’s life, and I encourage all my clients to be in at least a few photos with them. It’s just as important to capture the bond you share as it is to capture what your pet looks like.
Want to be in just a few photos? Every single one? It’s completely up to you. We’ll create the photos that matter most to you.

Do I have to be in the photos?
Nope—being in the photos is completely up to you. If you’d rather keep the focus on your pets, that’s totally fine.
That said, I highly encourage you to be in at least one photo with your pet. Some of the most meaningful photos I create are the ones that show the love you share.
I don’t like having my photo taken. Should I still be in the session?
You don’t have to be in the photos—but I hope you’ll consider it.
I hear this all the time: “I hate having my photo taken,” or “I just want photos of my dog.” And that’s completely okay. But years from now, you’ll likely treasure the photos of the two of you together just as much as the ones of your pet alone.
Your pet doesn’t care whether you’re wearing makeup, whether you think you need to lose a few pounds, or whether your hair is perfect. They simply know you’re their person. That’s the relationship I want to capture.
I’ll help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, guide you through the entire session, and offer suggestions for what to wear so you look and feel your best. Most of my clients tell me afterward that the experience was much easier—and a lot more fun—than they expected.

Print Products & Digital Files
What types of products do you offer?
I offer a variety of products to fit your style, your home, and your budget. Whether you’re looking for wall art, an album, or a few gift prints, I’ll help you choose what works best for both your photos and your space.
I offer mounted prints, canvas wraps, metal prints, custom-designed albums, portrait boxes, and more.
During your consultation and again at your ordering appointment, you’ll be able to see and handle product samples in person. It’s much easier to decide when you can compare them side by side and picture how they’ll look in your home.

What about the digital files?
Digital files sized for sharing are included at no additional charge with every printed product you purchase.
I don’t offer digital files as a standalone purchase. My focus is on creating beautiful finished artwork for your home, whether that’s wall art, an album, a portrait box, or a collection of smaller prints.
I know most clients also want to share their photos with friends and family or keep them on their phones. That’s why every printed product includes a matching web-sized digital file for sharing.
I want your favorite photos to become part of your home—not just tiny images on your phone or files tucked away on a hard drive.
Once I order my photos, how long does it take to get them?
Most orders are ready in about four weeks. Some products, such as albums or framed prints, may take a little longer. Before you place your order, I’ll let you know exactly what to expect.
If you need something sooner, just let me know. While I can’t guarantee a rush turnaround, I’ll always do my best to accommodate your deadline whenever possible.
What types of payment do you accept?
I accept credit cards, checks, cash, and Zelle.
If you’d prefer to spread your purchase over time, I’m happy to set up a payment plan that works for you.
