My Favorite Fall Photo Locations in Loudoun County
The mornings are cooler, the kids are back in school, and it feels like fall is almost here. It’s the most popular time for family and pet photo shoots in Loudoun County—and for good reason. The temperatures are cooler, the air is less humid, and the colors are stunning: reds, oranges, and yellows everywhere you look. And, at least in my opinion, fall clothing is the best for photo shoots—think sweaters, boots, and scarves. Not sure what to wear? Here are my tips for choosing outfits that look great in fall photos.
Here are some of my favorite locations in Loudoun County for fall photo shoots.
1. Morven Park
It’s hard to go wrong with Morven Park any time of year, but it’s especially beautiful in the fall. There are mature, colorful trees everywhere you look and open fields that turn golden, both making gorgeous backdrops for photos.
My three favorite spots are a little off the beaten path: the pedestrian road, the playing fields, and the grassy area near the main parking lot.
The pedestrian road is gravel, curves gently, and is lined with trees that arch over the road. When those trees are in full fall color, it’s a perfect photo location—especially with fallen leaves underfoot. The grassy area near the parking lot also gets covered with leaves, so sitting or lying in them surrounds you with color. And the playing fields have a long row of trees behind them, which makes a beautiful background for your fall photos.
2. Algonkian Regional Park
With its mix of trails, open fields, ponds, and river views, Algonkian Regional Park is a photographer’s dream in the fall. You’ll find mature trees, winding trails, and plenty of variety for fall photo shoots in Loudoun County. In mid-to-late October, the colors are spectacular, especially along the trails and near the water. There’s also plenty of space for pets to explore, which makes it a relaxed and fun location. I especially love photographing down by the river because the colorful fall trees reflecting in the water are stunning.
3. Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park
Like many of the parks described here, you have easy access to trails and the Potomac River. What makes this location different are the historic structures—really just old walls now, but full of character. The walls are textured with a variety of muted colors. They’re golden and work beautifully in the fall, especially when colorful leaves cover the ground. You can also choose angles that include both the walls and the surrounding trees.
4. Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park
If you like the idea of fall photos surrounded by history and nature, Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park delivers both. Trails and mature trees are just steps from the parking lot, so you can be on a path almost immediately.
If you want to explore more, you’ll have plenty of options. There are trails to suit any skill level—short and long, flat or hilly. A winding creek runs through the park, with boulders you can stand or sit on, plus easy access to the Potomac River. It’s generally not very crowded—a bonus if you’re taking family photos or have dogs who get distracted easily. When the leaves drop, the trails and ground are blanketed with color, adding to the beauty.
5. Bear’s Den and Bear Chase Brewing Company
These two locations are just minutes apart, so you can easily visit both in one trip. The trail to Bear’s Den Overlook is challenging, but the reward is worth it—panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. My favorite time to shoot here is sunrise, when the light hits the mountains and shows off the fall colors. At sunset, the mountains are backlit and in shadow, so the colors fade from view.
If you prefer sunset—or want to relax with a beer after your hike (although probably not if you do a sunrise shoot!)—head across the road to Bear Chase Brewery. Not only are they very dog-friendly, but the views are amazing. The brewery sits on a hilltop, so you get sweeping views of the mountains and valleys below. Position your family with those views behind you, and you’ve got a winning shot.
6. W&OD Trail
Easy to access and stretching 45 miles from Arlington to Purcellville, the W&OD Trail offers plenty of spots for fall photo shoots in Loudoun County. I especially like the sections between Leesburg and Purcellville for their mature trees and easy parking. The trail is paved, so it’s great for anyone who wants a smooth, accessible walk to a photo location. In mid-to-late October, the canopy of trees over parts of the trail is spectacular, and fallen leaves create a colorful layer underfoot.
7. Loudoun County Wineries
Loudoun County is home to more than 50 wineries, and most are dog friendly. Many have beautiful scenery, but three standouts are Bluemont Winery, Breaux Vineyards, and Stone Tower Winery. Cell phone snapshots are fine, but for professional photos, many wineries require reservations and a booking fee. They can also be crowded, which makes family photos more challenging—especially if your dog is easily distracted. On quieter days, though, the views with their stunning foliage make these spots unforgettable for fall photo shoots.
8. My Private Property
I do almost all my photo shoots on my private property, and for good reason. I’ve landscaped with photography in mind, with trees that show beautiful fall color and fields that turn golden in autumn. It’s also completely private, so there are no other people, dogs, or cars to distract your pet. The relaxed, unrushed atmosphere means we can take our time creating the kinds of photos you’ll treasure.
9. Blandy Experimental Farm
Two words: Ginkgo Grove. Yes, I know this isn’t Loudoun County, but it’s worth the drive to Clarke County just to see it—and take photos there. You really have to see it to believe it. This is a spot where photos say far more than words. The grove turns a brilliant golden yellow in late October, with leaves carpeting the ground as well as the trees. It gets crowded, especially on weekends and later in the day, so a weekday morning is best.
But here’s the catch: peak fall color only lasts a couple of weeks. Fall sessions fill quickly, and once the leaves are gone, they’re gone until next year. If you want vibrant, colorful portraits you’ll treasure forever, let’s get your session on the calendar now.
