As a pet photographer in Loudoun County, I get to witness something truly special: the incredible bond between pets and their people. When families reach out about photographing their pets, it’s often because they’ve realized something important – our time with our pets is precious. Today, I want to share one of these stories with you – a session with Mikko and Jack that perfectly captures why taking family photos with our pets shouldn’t wait.
Why Family Photos with Senior Dogs Matter More Than You Think
When Kate contacted me about photographing her family – including her husband Nick and their two dogs – she said something that really struck a chord: “We don’t have any formal family photos, and our guys are getting older, so we thought it was the right time.”
How many of us can relate to that? Our pets are family members, but sometimes we forget to document those precious moments until time starts slipping away. That’s exactly why pet photography means so much to me – it’s about preserving memories that will last a lifetime.
Meet Mikko: The 14-Year-Old Adventure Pup Who’s Young at Heart
Let me introduce you to Mikko, a Collie-Lab mix who’s been with Kate since she was 21 and is Kate’s “soul dog.” Fun fact: Kate’s first word was “dog,” but she had to wait until adulthood to have one of her own. When she finally adopted Mikko from the Humane Society, she calls it “the best $90 I ever spent.”
From day one, Mikko made it clear Kate and Nick were his people. At the shelter, he actually blocked other dogs from approaching Kate! He definitely knew who he wanted to go home with.
Mikko’s Personality Highlights
- Loves turning himself into a makeshift sled in the snow (yes, really!)
- Earned the nickname “princess” for his particular comfort preferences
- Nick’s OG running buddy, always leading the way on trails
- Still playful and going strong at 14 years old
Jack: The Protective Heeler Mix with a Heart of Gold
Five years after Mikko joined the family, Kate and Nick decided he needed a buddy. Just like Mikko chose Kate and Nick, he chose Jack too. At the Humane Society, Mikko started playing with Jack through the fence, and they headed home as a family of four.
Jack Brings His Own Special Charm to The Family:
- Takes his herding duties seriously, keeping watch over everyone
- A bit anxious in everyday life, but totally relaxes and comes into his own on camping trips
- Devoted companion to both his human parents and big brother Mikko
Kate’s Favorite Moments
Kate loved seeing Mikko pose on the boulder during the session – “he was so majestic and confident, representing himself like when he was younger.” And watching Jack race around? “He totally enjoyed himself,” she told me.
Kate’s advice for anyone considering a pet photography session: “Don’t hesitate. Do it ASAP and just book the session! You don’t need to wait for the ideal timing or get hung up on planning the perfect outfit. Just capture your family the way they are!”
Why Now Is the Perfect Time for Pet Photography
Now is the perfect time for pet photography. Our pets live in the moment, and some of the best photos come from capturing them exactly as they are, right now. Our pets are family, and just like we schedule family photos with our kids, our four-legged family members deserve to be celebrated and remembered too.
