Cats and Kittens

Cat and Kitten Photography in Northern Virginia

Because cats rule their homes—that’s where I photograph them!

Cats can be affectionate, curious, independent, shy—or all of the above in a single session! That’s part of what makes photographing them both rewarding and a bit of a challenge. This gallery features professional cat photography in Northern Virginia, with images that reflect each cat’s unique personality.

Because cats are usually most relaxed in familiar surroundings, I photograph them where they feel safest—at home. No stressful car rides, no carriers, no unfamiliar environments. Whether your cat wants to explore or lounge in a favorite sunny spot, I’ll work with their pace and personality to create photos that truly capture who they are.

Wondering if your cat would actually cooperate for photos? You’re not alone—and yes, it’s totally possible. These images show what’s possible when cats are photographed in the comfort of their own homes.

What’s it like to photograph a cat?

Well… if you have one, you probably already know! It’s definitely not the same as photographing a dog. But I absolutely love cats and I love photographing them. I have four cats of my own, so I understand their quirks, preferences, and the patience it takes to get great photos. (Fun toys and catnip help, too.)

Cats always set the pace during our sessions. Because—well—they’re cats! I never force poses or interactions. Instead, I create a calm, low-pressure environment where your cats can relax and just be themselves. I also know that new people in the home can make some cats nervous, so I give them space and time to get comfortable.

A calm approach makes all the difference.

“Ellen was wonderful with my cats. They were all immediately comfortable with her, even the shyer ones. The photographs were beautiful. Ellen paid very close attention to each animal’s attitude, expression, and background. I couldn’t be happier with the results.” — Joanne, mom to lots of cats
