Preparing for Your Pet Photo Shoot

Helpful Tips for Preparing for Your Pet Photography Session

Preparing for your pet photography session doesn’t have to be stressful! A little preparation goes a long way toward helping your dog (and you) feel comfortable and confident—and sets the stage for photos you’ll love. Whether your session is outdoors or in your home, these simple tips will help you get the most out of the experience (and make it more fun for everyone).

Top Tips to Help You and Your Dog Get Ready

  • Groom your dog close to the session date.
Bathe them and trim their nails the day before or the morning of your shoot, and give a quick brush right before we start. If your dog gets haircuts, schedule one about a week ahead so their coat looks more natural. Grooming makes a big difference—just like you want to look your best in the photos, you want your dog to look great too!

  • Pack a brush or comb.
Good to have on hand for quick touch-ups—especially if, say, your dog rolls in the grass…

  • Take the edge off their energy.
If your dog is high-energy, a 30–60 minute walk or low-key play session beforehand helps them relax and focus. Think of it as their warm-up.

  • Plan around their appetite.
Don’t feed your dog a full meal right before your session. A slightly hungry pup tends to have more energy—and is a lot more interested in treats! A full belly leads to nap mode… think Thanksgiving!

  • Pack their favorite treats.
Small, soft treats work best. They’re quick to eat and less likely to leave a trail of crumbs for your dog to hunt down mid-session.
